IAA Code of Ethics

  1. COMPETENCE
    1. The professional is qualified for the work performed with clients
    2. The professional shall keep all credentials current
    3. The professional shall keep up on the knowledge base within the discipline
    4. The professional understands the concept of transference and how to avoid it
    5. The professional does not work outside their scope of practice
  2. CLARITY
    1. Assurance of understanding
      1. All information to clients shall be clear, concise, properly written, and free of errors. 
      2. All contract should have terms and conditions that the client sees, understands, and agrees to in writing
      3. The professional makes sure the client understands and has seen all terms and conditions of any contract.
    2. Expectations
      1. The client shall know what is expected of them
      2. The client shall be told under what circumstances the professional would no longer be able to work with them
  3. INTEGRITY
    1. The professional will not lie to the client
    2. The professional shall quickly admit any mistakes or missteps and make amends where necessary
    3. The professional shall not have sexual relations with a client
  4. DUE CARE / PROFESSIONALISM
    1. Relationships with Clients
      1. The professional respects the views and opinions of the client
      2. The professional uses scaffolding with the client, that is, they meet the client where they are and provide support for the next step
      3. The professional does not take power away from the client
      4. The professional seeks to never cause harm to the client
      5. The professional shall never shame or bully the client to change perspective or behavior
      6. The professional will demonstrate fidelity to the client
  5. OBJECTIVITY
    1. Approach
      1. The professional shall approach the client with curiosity rather than judgment
    2. Conflicts of Interest
      1. The professional shall immediately let the client know if they have a mutual friend, colleague, or acquaintance
      2. The professional shall immediately let the client know if they have a financial interest in any product or service they are recommending to the client
  6. VERACITY
    1. Self-promotion
      1. The professional will present self, experience, education, and credentials honestly
      2. The professional will not partake in deceptive or misleading advertising 
    2. Promise-keeping
      1. The professional does not make any guarantees of results
      2. The professional tells the client the truth
    3. Intellectual property
      1. The professional will honor the copyrighted and trademarked material of all others including, where appropriate, refraining from using materials, obtaining permission, and properly citing.
  7. DIVERSITY / SOCIAL JUSTICE
    1. The professional services clients in a fair and just manner
    2. The professional does not discriminate based on age, gender, sexual orientation, race, color, ethnicity, nationality, religion
  8. PRIVACY 
    1. Confidentiality
      1. The professional shall not disclose any information about the client to anyone without express written permission from the client
      2. The professional shall not quote the client to others or in publications without express written permission
    2. Anonymity
      1. The professional will never communicate with the client anonymously

Know the Code of Ethics

The IAA exam will include the code of ethics. Make sure you know it and have it readily available when you take the exam.
